During questioning, one of the individuals being interrogated told the police that he turned to YouTube to learn ways to escape the police, inspired by the 'Asur' web series, as revealed by Senior Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan.
Meerut: Two men were arrested in Meerut over the weekend in connection with the alleged murder of a local businessman and his wife, according to officials.
The suspects admitted that they committed the crime after
being influenced by the 'Asur' web series, which was released in 2020, Senior
Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan stated.
On the previous Thursday, Dhan Kumar Jain (70), a resident
of the Brahmapuri area, was killed, while his wife Anju Jain (65) sustained
grievous injuries during a confrontation with two men attempting a robbery at
their residence, Sajwan explained. The perpetrators fled with cash and
valuables, he added.
Tragically, Anju succumbed to her injuries on the following
Friday while undergoing medical treatment, according to the police.
In response to the incident, a total of eight specialized
teams were assembled to crack the case. These teams meticulously reviewed CCTV
footage, conducted electronic surveillance, and gathered information from
informants. These combined efforts led to the apprehension of the two suspects.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Priyank
Sharma (25), also known as Parush, a final-year LLB student, and his associate
Yash Sharma (24), also known as Yashu, who graduated from Class 8 and is
employed at a battery shop, the police reported.
During the interrogation process, Priyank admitted to the
police that he sought out strategies on evading capture from YouTube, inspired
by the 'Asur' web series, as disclosed by the SSP.
The suspects also revealed that they used gloves, masks, and
helmets to conceal their identities, and altered the motorcycle's license plate
following the crime, as provided by the SSP.
The pair deliberately selected an escape route that avoided
surveillance cameras, according to the authorities.
In a deceptive move, a day prior to the incident, the
accused had visited the businessman's residence under the guise of searching
for a rental room, they added.
Subsequently, the SSP confirmed that a firearm, motorcycle,
clothing, helmets, and footwear worn during the crime, along with the stolen
gold, silver jewelry, and cash from the victim's residence, were all recovered
from the apprehended individuals.
In light of the incident's exposure, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav attempted to criticize the state government's handling of the matter.
On a social media platform (formerly Twitter), Yadav stated, "The distressing incident involving the murder of a businessman in Meerut, coupled with the invasion of his home, robbery, and the assault on his wife, is deeply disheartening and incredibly alarming."
He went on to say, "Under the BJP administration, the
economy is declining, officials are corrupt, the ruling party is accumulating
donations, and, most importantly, the fear of criminals has stifled business in
UP."
